Music and Memory

I have many memories of music at many different stages of my life. One of my earliest memories is when I was in Arkansas visiting my grandmother and singing the ABCs for her class when I was around kindergarten age (she was a teacher). One of my favorite early memories related to music was from my elementary school music class, which coincided with our Theater unit. My teacher had chosen a musical for us to watch, and that musical was Cats. I know most people find the musical weird and unsettling, but I loved it (I'm also just a huge cat person). It is still to this day one of my all-time favorite musicals. I remember my teacher's speech before we had watched it, warning us to not be immature, because there was a lot of but shaking, as they were mimicking cats. I fell so in love with the musical that it is one of the musicals i have on record, along with Man of Lamancha. The song that stuck with me the most from Cats was "Rum Tum Tugger". I just remember loving the tune and the visuals. I also adored Rum Tum Tuggers' outfit. Also, just to make my opinion know, I Hated the movie.

Another core memory of mine is from high school, in my Sophomore year. I was in my school's Treble choir, Sziréndal, all four years of high school. My best memories are from that choir, and I will forever miss and cherish those people and memories. The best time was the year we had gone to Disney to compete in the choral competition. It was just amazing to be able to run around Disney with my friends, showing them my favorite rides, as I had grown up going to Disney World. I remember competition day began with a little bit in Epcot, then we left to go compete. We got to the building and absolutely rocked the floor. We had done a song called "Flight" which had so many memories for our choir director. I remember after we had sung our heart out, she shed a tear, and then promptly told us we couldn't tell the other choir. to this day, I always will remember that trip when I hear the song.

Probably my most recent memory that I hold dear music-wise was from me and my boyfriends first (real) date. About a month before me and him had gotten into a relationship, we had been hanging out when I decided to show him my favorite band at that moment, The Crane Wives. I was talking about how much I wished I could see them in person, and when he looked it up, he saw they were going to be performing in Charleston the week we got back, and they happened to have two tickets left, so we bought them. It was to best experience ever, and i just remember standing in the back (we actually managed to get good spots that weren't too crowded) listening to them play my favorite song, and just being filled with emotions. It's a song titled Tongues and Teeth.

  1. Hey Isabel!! I absolutely love the story of your Crane Wives memory! I had never heard of them but just listening to them now- THEY ARE SO GOOD. New favorite- and just this summer I was at a concert and standing in the back is where I heard a favorite song and was also just feeling all the emotions- which makes me think perhaps the back of a concert is just as good as the front (:

  2. Isabel, No one else has ever shared the same love for Cats and I am so happy that you also have a personal connection to it. I used to fall asleep watching my VHS of Cats with the OBC and I just was always enchanted by the visuals and the melodies. AND I also hate the movie musical version. Thank you for making me feel seen by sharing that love for the show. Also I too have the fondest memories of choir and I am grateful that you shared that song with us. and thank you for sharing with us the Crane Wives, what a powerful group and message, maybe I have a new band to add to spotify now.

  3. Hey Isabel! I enjoyed reading your personal experience with music. I can totally relate to have a core memory with music when it involved a group of musicians competing. I swear those memories are a different type of love for music.
